Comprising: a footed bowl with deep flaring sides, painted to the exterior with a scholar and attendants in a pavilion garden, the interior with two bands of flowerheads on whorl grounds, apocryphal Yongle four-character mark to the centre; and a further flaring bowl decorated in delicate tones of underglaze blue with lotus plants, the interior with a small wave medallion, apocryphal Xuande four-character mark to the base.
The largest: 10.5cm (4 1/8in) diam. (2).

John Drew (1933–2006) was born in Tideswell, Derbyshire, and educated at Sedbergh School and the Queen's College, Oxford. He spent the majority of his professional career as an archivist in various African countries, before taking up a post at the University of Cape Town in 1978. His collection of Chinese ceramics encompasses pieces from the Neolithic period through to the eighteenth century. See R. Davids & D. Jellinek, , Oxford, 2011, p.157.
