This incense burner would have been part of a five-piece altar garniture set, known as the 'Five Offerings' (), which were widely used in Buddhist rituals to seek protection from the deities. In shape and decoration, the vessels included in these sets, which also comprised a pair of candlesticks and wine containers, recall those employed to perform ancestral sacrifices during the Shang and Zhou periods. Restoring the ancient Chinese ways through the reinterpretation of archaic forms was viewed by the Qing rulers as one way to reinstate the importance of performing filial acts, the core value of Confucian thought that legitimised the emperors' right to rule.
Compare a closely related iron-red enamelled incense burner, Jiaqing seal mark and of the period, forming part of an altar garniture in the Ethnographical Museum, Leiden, published in A.van Oort, , Lochem, 1977, pl.1. See also an iron-red enamelled incense burner, Jiaqing seal mark and of the period, which was sold at Sotheby's London, 14th November 2001, lot 125. Compare also a yellow-ground incense burner, Jiaqing seal mark and of the period, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in , Shanghai, 1999, pl. 139. See also an identical incense burner, Jiaqing seal mark and of the period, which was sold at Bonhams New York, 18 September 2023, lot 69.
A. van Oort,《Chinese Porcelain of the 19th and 20th Centuries》,洛克姆,1977年,圖版1。
