The ground decoration, composed of densely overlapping iron-red elements, may be interpreted either as a stylised 'fish-scale' pattern or as closely packed petals arranged in a scale-like formation. Such all-over red grounds are characteristic of a small group of porcelains produced during the Shunzhi and early Kangxi period. Fish-scale patterns in iron-red are particularly associated with Shunzhi and early Kangxi wares; compare, for example, a vase decorated with an iron-red 'fish-scale' ground surrounding polychrome enamel flowers and birds in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , Shenzhen, 2007, p.135, no.123.
The use of dense floral or scale-pattern grounds reserved in iron-red appears to have been especially favoured on certain export porcelains. A related Shunzhi-period jar decorated with flowers and rockwork against a red diaper-pattern ground is illustrated by T.Canepa and K.Butler, , London, 2021, p.345. The same jar is also published in , Alexandria, 1990, no.60, where the author notes that 'some pieces of this type were made for the Indian or Middle Eastern markets. Friedrich Volker asserts two red rolwagens were given to an Indian King in 1648'; see ., p.107.
Further documentary evidence is provided by T.Volker in , Leiden, 1971, p.105, where he records that on 31 May 1649 the Dutch informed Batavia of their intention to present the King of Surat with '...2 large red rolwagens with leaf work in relief and flowers...'. The distinctive predominance of iron-red decoration on the present vase may therefore suggest production for an export market, particularly India or the Middle East, where such richly ornamented wares appear to have enjoyed considerable appeal.
See a rare rouleau vase, Shunzhi, with flowers and iron-red 'fish-scale' pattern, which was sold at Bonhams London, 3 November 2022, lot 41. Compare also with a vase with red decoration in the background, Shunzhi, which was sold at Christie's New York, 'An Era of Inspiration: 17th-Century Chinese Porcelains from the Collection of Julia and John Curtis', 16 March 2015, lot 3546.
