The present cup is an unusually early and restrained example of sancai glazing. While the use of green and amber lead glazes anticipates the more fully developed sancai tradition of the Tang dynasty, the thinly potted form, short spreading foot and gently rounded sides are characteristic of Sui period ceramic wares. See a related cream-glazed stoneware cup, Sui dynasty, in the Art Institute of Chicago (acc.no.1941.3).
