Of rounded form rising from a flat base to a cylindrical neck, carved on either side with two cash coins inscribed wuzhu ('five zhu'), surrounded by floral scrolls, the stone of bright apple green tone with pale greenish-white striations, stopper. 5.5cm (2 1/8in) high. (2).

十九世紀 翡翠五銖錢紋鼻烟壺
The pair of coins carved on the snuff bottle bear the inscription Wu Zhu (五銖) 'Five Zhu', the denomination of the famous bronze coin first introduced during the Han dynasty in 118 BC. Remaining in use for over seven centuries, 'Wu Zhu' coins came to symbolise antiquity, prosperity, and enduring wealth. In later Chinese decorative art, their distinctive circular form with a square central aperture made them an auspicious motif, conveying wishes for good fortune, financial success, and longevity.
