The bald head, prominent upturned nose, large eyes and distinctive upturned shoes of the present figure have led to its identification as a foreigner. The type, however, differs from the more familiar depictions of Central Asian or Western Asian foreigners in Tang pottery, who are generally shown with beards, caps and strongly modelled facial features. The figure may instead represent an entertainer or comic performer, although its precise identity remains uncertain. See a pottery figurine of a dwarf, Tang dynasty, with similarly upturned nose, illustrated in , Xi'an, 2014, p.216, no.274.
