Tang Dynasty
Seated in dhyanasana on a rectangular pedestal, the right hand raised in abhayamudra and the left hand resting on the knee in varadamudra, the face depicted with a serene facial expression, gentle smile, and downcast eyes, framed by high-set ears and an ushnisha above short, tightly curled hair, clad in a thin, clinging monastic robe with rhythmic folds cascading elegantly over the front of the seat, revealing the soft, rounded contours of the torso beneath, the stone of a delicate warm cream tone.

The present figure epitomises the naturalism and harmonious idealism achieved during the Tang dynasty (618–907) — widely regarded as the golden age of Chinese Buddhist art. Moving past the flatter, stylised forms of the Northern Dynasties, Tang sculptors infused sacred imagery with bodily warmth, naturalistic weight, and refined elegance.

本坐像可爲唐代佛教藝術寫實與和諧理想主義之完美縮影。唐代亦公認為中國佛教藝術之黃金時代，其佛教雕塑擺脫了北朝時期較為扁平、形式化之風格，為神聖之宗教造像賦予肉體之溫潤感、自然之體量感與高雅之韻致。
