Covered in a brown glaze and decorated in "pâte-sur-pâte" technique with white-slip motifs of flying cranes amidst swirling clouds.
Note:
The Jiajing Emperor assumed an elaborate sequence of Daoist titles—among them "Lingxiao Shangqing Tonglei Yuanyang Miaoyi Feixuan Zhenjun"—and, in the wake of the "Renyin Palace Incident" of 1542, retreated permanently to the Western Park. There, he immersed himself in Daoist cultivation and abandoned court audiences for more than twenty years, driven by an unwavering quest for immortality. He also commissioned the Daoist priest Shao Yuanjie to conduct crane-summoning rituals, believing their success would manifest his supernatural legitimacy. During the Jiajing period, porcelain decorated with cranes became a visual instrument of imperial Daoist devotion. A notable example is a blue-and-white gourd-shaped vase with crane motifs in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (accession no. 1882-727).
