Tim O'Donovan (1932-2025) was an Irish-born royal chronicler who spent more than four decades meticulously cataloguing the official engagements of the British Royal Family. A retired executive in the printing and paper industries, he turned his passion for detail into an annual statistical analysis of royal duties, compiling data from the Court Circular in leather-bound ledgers that became a uniquely authoritative—and at times controversial—record of royal work patterns.
The present lot is notable for its Yuanmingyuan mark on the base of the box, which may be translated as . Yuanmingyuan (圓明園, Garden of Perfect Brightness), also known as the Old Summer Palace, was a complex of Imperial gardens and palaces located in Haidian District, Beijing, China. It was constructed and expanded throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, serving as the main Imperial residence of the Yongzheng Emperor and his four successors. Celebrated for its magnificent gardens and vast collections of Imperial art and treasures, the complex was devastated by British and French forces during the Second Opium War (1856–1860).
Compare with an Imperial cloisonné enamel vase which was sold at Bonhams London, 12 May 2011, lot 437, which bears incised marks in a format comparable to those found on the present lot. The inscription is arranged in two lines: the upper line is the Qianlong six-character reign mark, while the lower line reads (建福宮第二分), which may be translated as 'Second Section of the Palace of Accumulated Blessings'.
