The present lot belongs to a rare group of Wanli period cloisonné enamel wares bearing a prominent Wanli six-character reign mark enclosed within a rectangular cartouche and encircled by stylised heads. See for example a cloisonné enamel incense burner, Wanli six-character mark and of the period, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , vol.1, Beijing, 2011, pp.204-205, no.100. See also several other cloisonné enamel pieces with similar Wanli six-character marks, illustrated in , nos.101, 110, 112. Another rare incense burner in this collection, lot 24, similarly bears a red-enamel-infilled six-character reign mark on the base.
The combination of (ten thousand), (longevity) and peaches creates an auspicious decorative programme expressing wishes for longevity and prosperity. The character conveys abundance and perpetuity, while the peach was traditionally associated with Immortality through its connection with Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, and her peaches of Immortality. The character reinforces this association with long life, making the decoration particularly appropriate for a vessel intended to convey auspicious wishes. See a rectangular cloisonné enamel incense burner and cover with roundels, Jingtai six-character mark, Wanli, illustrated in ., no.99. See also a cloisonné vase, late Ming dynasty, with characters, peaches and cranes, illustrated in ibid., no.128.
