A hexagonal salt, painted in underglaze cobalt blue. Each of the six facets is decorated with a different landscape vignette, alternating between figures in garden settings, a lady crossing a river by boat, dramatic rockwork, and ornamental trees. The upper and lower edges are enclosed by narrow bands of stylised scrolling foliage.
The unusual hexagonal form reflects the influence of European silverware, being adapted from European silver salt cellars. This fusion of Western form and Chinese decorative tradition reflects the Transitional period’s interest in foreign shapes and their reinterpretation in porcelain.
