Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche ('Precious Teacher'), is one of the most revered figures of Tibetan Buddhism and is particularly venerated within the Nyingma tradition, which traces its origins to his transmission of Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century.
Seated in vajrasana on a carefully articulated lotus base, Padmasambhava is identified by his characteristic attributes: a vajra held aloft in his raised right hand and a kapala in his left. He wears a richly textured monastic robe with delicately chased borders, while his distinctive monk's cape frames a composed face with a steadfast gaze.
Compare stylistically to a figure of a Kagyu Lama, Tibet, 13th/14th century, sold at Bonhams, Hong Kong, 5 May 2025, lot 103.
