Among the most beloved deities of the Nepalese Buddhist tradition, Vasudhara is the giver of abundance in every form, presiding over prosperity of both body and spirit. Her hands hold the emblems of her gifts—the water pot of sustenance, the sheaf of grain, the strand of jewels, and the Prajnaparamita Sutra, source of the highest wisdom—so that fertility, nourishment, wealth, and knowledge are offered together within her aureole of arms. Her lavish jewellery identifies her as a bodhisattva, one who traverses both earthly and celestial realms in service of all sentient beings. One of the principal deities to emerge with the crystallization of Buddhist cults in Nepal, she holds these many attributes in serene equilibrium, her expression warm with empathy and generosity.
Modelled with yielding forms and fluid gesture, the figure's sensuous contours, its gentle stillness and its lavish ornament are quintessentially Nepalese. Almost without exception, Nepalese goddesses were represented with rounded breasts, youthful bodies, and untroubled faces. These attributes reflect an artistic inheritance from India, where the divine and the sensual had long been conceived as mutually entwined. Consistent with the broader corpus of Vasudhara imagery, such conventions of posture and countenance were only rarely set aside.
A closely comparable example, sold at Christie's, Hong Kong, 30 November 2020, lot 3012, shares the same taut yet fleshy modelling. Another, formerly in the Jules Speelman Collection (Bonhams, Paris, 11 June 2024, lot 2), mirrors the present figure almost feature for feature—the fine arched brows above heavy lids, the rounded chin, the pursed lower lip beneath the tip of the nose—the whole composed in the same beatific repose. A third closely related example is held in the Cleveland Museum of Art (1947.493).
