Late Shang Dynasty, with a cast inscription zu gui
Rising from the tripod feet, the deep oval body with a flared open spout flanked by a pair of mushroom-shaped posts and opposite to a flaring triangular flange, decorated with a frieze of leiwen pattern forming a large taotie mask to one side, a loop handle on the opposite side surmounting a buffalo head, a two-character inscription cast at waist under the handle, the smooth metal surface with light encrustations in areas.

Compare a very similar bronze decorated with large swirls of ground, and with a four-character inscription under the handle, unearthed in 1978 from M1572, Xiaomintunnan, Anyang, Henan province, illustrated in the , Dongguan, 1997, p. 15. no. 14, described as late Shang dynasty. Compare another bronze with similar shallow relief and with a single character cast under the handle, illustrated by Bagley, , Cambridge, 1987, pp. 198-199, no. 20, described as 12th-11th BC, latter half of the Anyang period.
See the bronze Gui from the George Eumorfopoulos Collection and now in the collection of the British Museum, bearing a cast inscription , illustrated on the Museum's website, inventory no. 1936.1118.65.
