The oil paintings of Yi Ming are perhaps his most important artistic contribution in a career bejewelled with significant achievements that include becoming Chief Image Designer for both the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games, alongside work in film art direction and fashion criticism.
The present work is part of his important oeuvre of paintings that synthesise Eastern spiritual sensibility and Western abstract expressionism. It draws upon the ancient Chinese aesthetic principle of 'leaving blank space' (留白) in traditional Chinese landscape painting. His direct dialogue with Western abstract expressionism is given further nuance when viewed in the context of the visual language created by 20th century masters Zao Wou-Ki (1920–2013) and Chu Teh-Chun (1920–2014).
These artists began the process of marrying spatial and philosophical conception of Chinese landscape painting with Western abstract expressionism exploring the intersection of calligraphic, colour and light. In Yi's work we see something of the depth and emptiness of Zao married with the colour and rhythm of Chu.
We also see a masterful play with traditional Chinese artistic form. The vertical format of the work recalls the multi-perspective landscapes paintings, made for the hanging scroll format, during the Classical era of Chinese paintings. The eye is drawn effortlessly from bottom to top, and deep inside the 'imaginary landscape' which is afforded a gravity and monumentality by the layering of spirited brushstrokes in rich oils, in place of the more traditional medium of ink.
One of the striking attributes of the current work is its rich purple palette, which through modulations between black and white, mediates between themes of past and present, emptiness and plenty, and these, taken together, evoke the creative power of the elements earth, wind and water.
The juxtaposition of the tight defined brushwork of dark fissures, with ephemeral cloud-like sweeps of white and purple, allows the viewer to inhabit both of these dichotomies simultaneously, uncertain as to which overlays the other. The viewer may thereby break free from the painting's grounding in nature to a multifaceted mental world of unrestricted possibilities. The title of the work 'Dawning' turns the natural phenomenon of the 'dawn' into a verb, an action. On one level this is a personification of nature, by injecting it with human agency. On another, it is a process of imbuing human thought with the potential of nature, which ultimately allows the viewer to experience the depth and profundity of the artist's creative world through the potential of a future emerging from the darkness of the past.
Compare to a related work by Yi Ming, , which was sold at China Guardian Hong Kong, 7 April 2025, lot 89; and another work by the artist, sold at Rongbao Zhai, Beijing, 18-19 June 2024, lot 1572.
