Ming Dynasty, 16th century
Crisply carved through layers of black lacquer to reveal the red ground with four cartouches enclosing figural scenes set in landscapes, all against a diaper ground, between a band of diamond diaper-pattern around the mouth rim and a petal border below, the foot further decorated with a key-fret border, the interior and foot covered in black lacquer, fitted box.

Lacquer bowls decorated with figural scenes in landscapes are rare. A related cinnabar lacquer bowl, carved with four shaped cartouches enclosing similar figural scenes and with a key-fret band around the foot, Wanli mark and of the period, is illustrated by D.Clifford, , London, 1992, p.96, pl.71. Another red lacquer bowl of comparable form and size, (25.3cm diam.), decorated with pine and cranes, inscribed and dated to 1541, is illustrated in , p.95, pl.68.
The decorative borders of the present bowl are characteristic of Ming dynasty lacquer. Compare a smaller red lacquer bowl, Ming dynasty, from the collection of Sir Harry M.Garner, in the British Museum (acc.no.1974,0226.40).
For related bowls carved through black lacquer to reveal a red ground, see a smaller 'phoenix and peony' bowl (13.9cm), 15th century, carved with phoenix flying amongst peonies, published in , Shoto Museum of Art, Tokyo, 1991, p.74, no.85, and later sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 November 2012, lot 2100; a late Ming dynasty bowl decorated with phoenixes and peonies illustrated in , vol.20, Hong Kong, 2010, pl.66.
碗撇口，深壁，圈足。外髹朱黑二色，內髹黑漆。碗身開光，以朱漆錦紋為底，黑漆雕人物出游圖，開光上下有菱形錦紋及變形蓮瓣紋，足部一圈雕飾回紋。
飾山水人物故事圖之漆碗傳世稀少。參考一件萬曆款剔紅漆碗，有四開光，內飾相類人物場景，足沿亦飾回紋一周，著錄於D.Clifford，《Chinese Carved Lacquer》，倫敦，1992年，頁96，圖版71。另參考一件形制尺寸相近之明嘉靖剔紅漆碗（直徑25.3厘米），飾松鶴紋，底刻紀年款（1541年），見同書，頁95，圖版68。
本品之邊飾具典型明代漆器特徵，比較大英博物館藏一件明代紅漆小碗，原屬Harry M. Garner爵士收藏（館藏編號1974,0226.40）。
此類剔黑碗，參考一件十五世紀鳳穿牡丹漆碗（13.9厘米），載於《中国の漆工芸》，東京松濤美術館，1991年，頁74，編號85，後售於香港佳士得，2012年11月28日，拍品編號2100；另見一件明晚期鳳穿牡丹紋碗，載於《沐文堂收藏全集：中國漆藝》，卷20，香港，2010年，圖版66。
