註：「離烏魯木齊不遠的白楊溝，由於交通較便，已開放為旅遊區，小小的山溝向中外來賓們展現了牧區風光，彷彿是新疆遼闊牧場的縮影。草地像是覆蓋在山坡下的一張巨大綠色地毯，地毯太大了，拉扯不平，形成一些優美的波狀摺紋。牛、馬、羊，這些白、棕、黑的點和色塊自由自在地散佈在綠色的草地上，它們還往往擴散到山坡高處……我遇到不少畫家，大家都感到牧區好看不好畫……細分析，牧場的美感來自其遼闊，來自其波狀綫隱約的微妙變化，色彩單純中潛藏着綫的多變。那圓圓的氈房協調了山坡與草地的大弧線，亦可說它就是那些大弧線的緊縮。當我用油彩表現牧場與塔松的青綠色調時，總感到擊不中對象美感的要害，反不如用線較易捕捉其身段體態之美。」

一九八一年夏，吳冠中與中央工藝美院師生到新疆講學寫生，此行收穫頗豐，寫下〈 新疆行〉速寫冊等，本幅亦此行成果。相較同期描繪牧場全貌之作，畫中聚焦於草原上放牧景象，大地遼闊，如披綠茵、牧畜或低首覓食，或曲肢伏地，意態安然憩息。畫家僅以寥寥數筆勾勒遠方山勢連綿起伏，而以前景為經營重心，細密短線，如躍動音符遍布草坡、牛隻。畫家對線條表現的探索不拘限於山勢輪廓，筆下長短線條相互呼應間，空間層次自生，營造牧場生機盎然的韻律美。
