This finely carved limestone head, with its strong yet sensitively modelled features, is related to examples from Qingzhou, Shandong Province. Compare a head of Buddha, mid-6th century, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, acc.no.2001.422. See also another stone head of Buddha, Northern Qi dynasty, illustrated in , Taipei, 1997, pl.40.
Buddhist sculpture of the Northern Qi period, such as the present lot, is distinguished by its refinement and lyrical elegance, representing a pivotal moment in the development of Chinese religious art. Figures are typically slender and elongated, with softly rounded features, downcast eyes, and a gentle smile that conveys serenity and inner contemplation. Influenced by Indian Gupta and Central Asian traditions yet reinterpreted through a distinctly Chinese lens, Northern Qi sculpture strikes a balance between technical finesse and devotional expression. Important centres such as Ye and Qingzhou produced works of remarkable quality, as revealed in major archaeological discoveries, demonstrating the period's role as a bridge between the solemn grandeur of the Northern Wei and the fuller naturalism of the Tang.
See a related limestone head of Buddha, Northern Qi/Sui dynasty, which was sold at Bonhams New York, 19 March 2018, lot 8160.
