Whilst figural lighting vessels from the Qianlong period are more commonly encountered in bronze or cloisonné enamel, hardwood examples — particularly in dense zitan are comparatively rare. For related Qing Court figural lighting vessels in other media, see a cloisonné enamel figure of a kneeling foreigner supporting a lamp stand, early Qing dynasty, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Metal-bodied Enamel Ware, Hong Kong, 2002, pl. 92. Compare also a pair of cloisonné enamel 'foreigner' candlesticks, 18th century, which was sold at Christie's London, 8 November 2011, lot 68. See also a pair of bronze figural candlesticks, Kangxi period, from the Caramoor Centre for Music and the Arts, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, 15 March 2016, lot 148.
During the Qing dynasty, elephants carrying vases formed part of Imperial processions during royal birthday celebrations. The visual pairing of the elephant () and the vase () forms the homophonic pun for ('peaceful times'), symbolising harmony and stability. The addition of sprigs further conveys wishes for longevity, adding a classic auspicious layer to the design.
