The elegantly lobed and rounded sides rising to a barbed rim with ten brackets, crisply carved through layers of lustrous black and red lacquer with a central flower head issuing five petals and encircled by two concentric bands of guri scrolls, the exterior with a further band, all supported on a lobed foot around a lacquered recessed base, Japanese wood box.

This kind of lacquer is often referred to by the Japanese term , after the pommel or -shaped scrolls carved in V or U-shaped cuts. In this particularly fine example, the design is exceptionally well-balanced, with each lobe following the curves of a scroll in the widest band. Whilst the mallow shape recalls Song dynasty aesthetics, the bold, elegant carving and the polished, deeply rounded surface convey the vitality characteristic of fine Yuan dynasty lacquer. The foot rim, which echoes the lobed profile of the sides, is also characteristic of 14th century pieces, as seen for example in a lobed lacquer tray, 14th century, in the Kyoto National Museum (acc.no.HK35). A very similar red lacquer 'guri' dish, Yuan dynasty, is in the collection of the Seattle Art Museum (acc.no.74.21).
The cross-section of the carved edges reveals the black and red layers of lacquer, see for example a small dish, Yuan dynasty, from the Palace Museum, Beijing, and in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2006, pl.12, which also exhibits three layers of red lacquer. Compare also with a very similar lacquer lobed dish, Yuan dynasty, which was exhibited in (), Tokyo Bijutsu Club, Tokyo, 20-22 May 1970, and illustrated in the catalogue, no.39.

盤開十瓣葵口，各瓣作一如意卷雲頭，朵朵相連；內接五朵，環於盤腹，再接五小朵，拱於盤心。通體厚髹黑漆以作剔犀，堆漆堅實，烏間朱線，漆色烏黑如墨，漆面澈亮如鏡。
此類剔犀漆器，紋飾作如意雲頭狀，日本稱之為「屈輪」。本品構圖勻稱，各瓣作一如意雲頭，匠心獨運。葵瓣式造型契合宋代審美，而其刀法雄健圓厚，漆面光亮潤澤，則盡顯元代上佳漆器之特徵。足沿隨器身作花瓣式，亦為十四世紀漆器之特徵，例如京都國立博物館藏一件十四世紀剔犀葵瓣式盤（館藏編號HK35）。西雅圖藝術博物館亦藏一件元代剔犀紅漆盤（館藏編號74.21），與本品類近。
本品漆層有黑、朱兩色，黑漆側層露朱漆線。參考清宮舊藏一件元代剔犀小盤，現藏於北京故宮博物院，見《故宮博物院藏文物珍品全集：元明漆器》，香港，2006年，圖版12，該盤亦見三層紅漆。另可比對一件元代剔犀葵瓣式盤，曾展於東京美術俱樂部《中國の漆工芸》，東京，1970年5月20至22日，圖錄編號39。
參考一件元代剔犀花口盤，尺寸較小（直徑22厘米），作八瓣式，飾三組如意雲紋，售於香港佳士得，2022年5月30日，拍品編號2895。
