Statues of Rama are relatively rare in Nepal, as he is more frequently depicted in painting. Identified by his bow and arrow, Rama is the seventh avatar of Vishnu and hero of the Ramayana. The established presence of the Ramayana in Nepal is attested by a 15th-century Nepalese textile panel embroidered with scenes from the epic, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1995.331).
Representations of Rama became increasingly prominent from the 17th century onwards, coinciding with a growing interest in Vaishnavism, especially during the late Malla period (c. 1600–1769). Compare the rounded modelling of the figure and closely related facial features, with a figure of Shiva sold in Sotheby's, Paris, 11 June 2026, lot 1.
