See a related set of four huanghuali 'lamp-hanger' chairs, dengguayi, 16th/17th century, illustrated by Dr Chu-Pak Lau, Classical Chinese Huanghuali Furniture from the Haven Collection, Hong Kong, 2016, no.19. 'Lamp-hanger' chairs are so termed because of their resemblance to the bamboo furniture used in Ming China to support hanging lamps. Such lamp-hangers were particularly associated with the Jiangnan region of the lower Yangtze River and are frequently depicted in woodblock-printed books of the period. The relatively slender construction of these chairs, together with their lack of armrests and their practical use as movable furniture, may partly account for the scarcity of surviving examples.
