LACQUER: JAPAN, EDO PERIOD (17TH CENTURY), MOUNTS: NORTH EUROPE, 18TH-19TH CENTURY
The rectangular body with a hinged <i>inrobuta</i> (flush-fitting lid) lacquered in silver and gold <i>takamaki-e</i> with highlights in <i>e-nashiji</i>, decorated with a European hound seated on its hindquarters with raised forepaws on a <i>sanpo</i> (stand for ceremonial offerings) reserved on a<i> roiro-nuri</i> ground, the <i>sanpo</i> of typical shallow square form with everted rim and supported on a high flaring foot pierced with openings in the form of flowers, the sides of the box and lid fitted with European gilt-metal mounts pierced and cast with stylised flowers, the box raised on four gilt-metal feet in the form of mythological beasts possibly representing chimera.

The inside of the lid stuck with an old handwritten label: <i>this box belonged to Queen Charlotte (Queen of George III)</i>
