Late Ming Dynasty
Of circular form, the cover finely carved through the red lacquer with lychees borne on leafy branches, the rounded fruits alternately carved with a naturalistic texture, the box similarly decorated to the underside with a further leafy spray bearing lychees, all set against a carved diaper ground, the interior lacquered black, Japanese wood box.

Lacquer boxes decorated with the lychee motif were popular during the Ming dynasty. A comparable Ming dynasty example, similar in the size and arrangement of the fruit, is in the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in , Taipei, 2008, p.66, no.49. Another related example, dated to the late Ming dynasty, is in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in , Shanghai, 2018, p.139, no.87. Compare also three carved cinnabar lacquer 'lychee' boxes and covers, late 15th/early 16th century, illustrated in , Stuttgart, 2006, no.61.
