Late Ming Dynasty
Deeply carved around the body with scattered precious objects including ribboned Daoist castanets, in addition to a pair of lychee fruit and a pair of rounded fruit, all against a diaper-pattern ground, supported by a tall, splayed foot carved with flowering leafy branches, all between narrow key-fret borders below the mouth rim and above the foot, the interior lacquered black, fitted boxes.

Compare with a related carved lacquer stem bowl, Jiajing, carved with sprigs of lychee and , from the collection of Sakamoto Gorō, later sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 7 October 2013, lot 156. Another lacquer stem bowl, 17th century, was sold at Christie's London, 6 November 2007, lot 74.
, literally meaning 'Eight Treasures', refers to a group of auspicious objects associated with the Eight Immortals of Daoism, each serving as an attribute of one of the Immortals. The castanets depicted on the present lot are the attribute of Cao Guojiu, who is traditionally identified as an Imperial brother-in-law () of Emperor Renzong of the Northern Song dynasty.

八寶,此處指「道家八寶」,為八仙各持之法器。本品所繪玉板,即曹國舅之法器。曹國舅,名佾,相傳為宋朝曹太后之弟,故稱國舅。
