Tea bowls, such as the present lot, were particularly well suited to the preparation of whisked powdered tea, their dark iron-rich glazes providing a striking ground for the pale foam produced during whisking. The thickly applied glaze also helped retain the heat of the tea while reducing the transfer of heat to the exterior of the bowl. The celebrated appreciation of such vessels at the Song Court is recorded by Emperor Huizong (r. 1101–1125), whose Daguan chalun (大觀茶論), a treatise on tea, praised black-glazed Jian bowls decorated with the distinctive streaks known as 'hare's fur'. The association of Jian tea bowls with powdered tea continued beyond China, and examples are believed to have reached Japan during the Kamakura period (1185–1333), alongside the transmission of Zen Buddhism, where they became highly prized within the tea tradition.
Examples of comparable Jian bowls are in several major museum collections. See one, 12th/13th century, in the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, illustrated in , Cambridge MA, 1995, no.79; another in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 1996, no.204; a bowl with a metal-bound rim in the Kyoto National Museum, illustrated in (Chinese Ceramics: Tenmoku), Tokyo, 1999, pl.39; and another bowl, also with a metal-bound rim, in the Meiyintang Collection, illustrated by R.Krahl, , London, 1994, no.530.
