This superb pouring vessel is a rare and refined jade rendition of a Yuan dynasty vessel form now known as yi (匜), with its decoration and construction suggesting that it was made as a luxury object for the Yuan elite. Yuan metal generally feature a simple loop beneath the spout, traditionally understood to have facilitated the suspension of the vessel from a saddle during travel. On the present jade vessel, this practical feature has been transformed into an elaborate openwork composition of scrolling clouds, abandoning its utilitarian function in favour of an exceptionally refined decorative treatment. See a similar jade , Southern Song to Ming dynasty, in the Palace Museum, Taipei (acc.no.故玉003560N000000000), which retains a simple loop beneath the spout. The present vessel is distinguished by its elaborate cloud-scroll decoration, demonstrating a more sophisticated and technically demanding treatment.
This cloud-shaped support can be linked to the cloud-scroll struts found on contemporary ceramic , particularly those in Longquan celadon and blue and white. See, for example, a Longquan celadon-glazed ewer with a cloud strut connecting the neck to the spout, Ming dynasty, illustrated in , Hangzhou, 1998, no.138; and a blue and white , Yuan dynasty, illustrated in , Shanghai, 2012, pp.148–149, no.42. The cloud motif, long associated in Chinese art with the celestial realm and auspicious power, lends an appropriately elevated character to what had originally been a practical structural feature. The rich green hue of the present lot may likewise allude to its more common Longquan ceramic counterpart, typically covered in a thick, lustrous sea-green glaze, such as the celadon-glazed Longquan , Yuan dynasty, excavated in Taishun County, Zhejiang, and illustrated in , Taipei, 2014, no.148-2.
Compare the broad and intricately carved handle with that on a jade round box with cloud-pattern handle, Song to Yuan dynasty, in the Palace Museum, Taipei (acc. no. 故玉003187N000000000). See also a jade washer with a similarly broad and intricately carved flower-knot handle, Jin dynasty, in the same collection (acc.no.故玉003932N000000000), and a green jade cup with a triangular handle, Song dynasty, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in , Beijing, 2011, no.63.
The term was borrowed from the nomenclature of ancient ritual bronze vessels, but the form that emerged in the 14th century is distinctly Yuan, reflecting the Mongol rulers' appropriation of established Chinese traditions to suit their own tastes and practices. See a blue and white ceramic example, Yuan dynasty, in the British Museum, London, illustrated by J.Harrison-Hall, , London, 2001, p.69, fig.1:22; and a gilt blue-glaze pouring vessel, Yuan dynasty, excavated in Baoding, Hebei Province, in the Palace Museum, Beijing (acc.no. The shape of these vessels may have originated in the nomadic tradition of drinking , a fermented mare's milk traditionally consumed communally at banquets, for which such a broad, rounded form may have been particularly practical. Compare the present vessel's angular spout and sharp-lipped rim with a silver pouring bowl, inscribed with the year 1333 and of the period, excavated in Hefei, Anhui, and illustrated in , The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2010, p.288, fig.331; and also with a related silver pouring bowl, Yuan dynasty, in the collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City (acc.no.35-124/3).
In Yuan culture, such pouring vessels were used to pour wine into smaller cups and often appear together with vases. This association is supported by their frequent appearance together in archaeological contexts and in contemporary illustrations, including a mural in a tomb dated 1269 in Shaanxi Province depicting Zhang Andabuhua and his wife Yunxian flanked by tables set with various utensils, illustrated in , The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2010, p.83, fig. 115. For a detailed discussion on the use of vessels, see C.Ho, 'Social Life under the Mongols as seen in Ceramics', , vol. 59, 1996, p.44.
安徽省合肥曾出土一件「至順癸酉(1333年)」款的銀匜,與本品同設方折流,錄於紐約大都會藝術博物館展覽圖錄《The World of Khubilai Khan: Chinese Art in the Yuan Dynasty》,紐約,2010年,頁288,圖331。
有關匜器用途之詳論,見何翠媚〈Social Life under the Mongols as seen in Ceramics〉,《東方陶瓷學會會刊》,第59期,1996年,頁44。
