Compare with a similar plaque excavated in a Ming tomb near Shanghai, though not marked, see Shanghai Museum, accessed here. Similar to the current lot, the ground of the carving is left slightly rough, and not polished, the Museum website notes that it is quite rare.
Huang Musong was a military commander and politician of the late Qing and early Republic Period. After the 13th Dalai Lama died in Dec 1933, Huang was appointed Special Envoy to offer sacrifices to the late Dalai Lama in Jan 1934 (the 23rd year of the Republic). In Aug 1934 he travelled to the Potala Palace to perform the memorial rites, and he conferred on the 13th Dalai Lama the posthumous title 'Hu Guo Hong Fa Pu Ci Yuan Jue Da Shi' (Great Master of Universal Compassion and Perfect Enlightenment, Protector of the Nation and Propagator of the Dharma). In Mar 1935 he was appointed Chairman of the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission. The accompanying scanned photograph is inscribed by Huang: 'A photograph taken on the journey into Tibet as envoy, dressed in lama's robes. For Mr Zaizhi to keep, respectfully presented by Huang Musong. The 24th year of the Republic [1935].'
