The term refers to a distinctive lacquerware technique documented as early as the 9th century. Characterised by alternating layers of coloured lacquer, typically red and black, that are repeatedly applied and then carved to reveal an intricate pattern of curved scrolls.
The present dish is distinguished by its rare and refined five-lobed shape. A red lacquer dish (30.4cm diam.) in similar shape and design, late Yuan/early Ming dynasty, is in the Shanghai Museum and illustrated in , Shanghai, 2018, p.95, no.53. See another closely related example (38.5cm diam.), Ming dynasty, 16th century, in the Kyoto National Museum (acc.no.HK21). A related five-lobed lacquer food box, was included in the exhibition , Tokugawa Art Museum, Nagoya, and Nezu Institute of Fine Arts, Tokyo, 1984, cat. no.18.
Compare with a black lacquer cinquefoil tray, late Yuan/early Ming dynasty, 14th/15th century, of similar design but larger, which was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 28 May 2014, lot 3501.
