The present painting is a fine example of the work of Chow Kwa (active mid-19th century), one of the leading artists of the China Trade. Also known as Su Zhaocheng (蘇兆成), Chow Kwa maintained a studio on Park Lane and later on Hankow Road in Shanghai.
The view depicts the embanked quayside of the Bund, extending from the British Consulate at one end to the French Concession at the other. The Huangpu River is populated by a variety of vessels, including American and British steamers, Chinese junks, tanka boats, sampans and barges, while the waterfront is shown with considerable topographical detail. Several features help to establish the date of the composition at around 1857. Most notably, the Wills Bridge, visible at the far right spanning Soochow Creek, was completed in October 1856, while other identifiable buildings and structures provide further evidence for a date in the later 1850s.

A slightly smaller painting by Chow Kwa depicting the Bund, Shanghai, was sold at Christie's London, 29 October 2015, lot 11.
