Another cup and saucer from this very rare service is in a private European collection.
The Hewelcke factory was established by two porcelain merchants from Dresden, Nathaniel Friedrich and Maria Dorothea Hewelke. They were granted a 20-year privilege by the Venetian Senate in 1758 to make porcelain, the first to do so since the Vezzi workshop which had folded nearly 30 years earlier. Production lasted until 1763 when the Hewelkes returned to Dresden at the end of the Seven Years War, and the factory was taken over by Geminiano Cozzi.
