Yu Zhiding was, for a time, court painter to the Kangxi EmperorÄera (1662-1722) and also held a post in the Ministry of Rites. He worked primarily as a figure painter and also produced portraits using the pure line technique. This depiction of the Bodhisattva Guanyin, standing on lotus petals and pouring nectar from his flask, could be a later imitation of his style. Liu Lun was a Hanlin scholar, minister and Grand Secretary at the imperial court during the Qianlong era. He was also a renowned poet and calligrapher who, as co-compiler of the imperial catalogue of calligraphy and painting, Shiqu baoji, was commissioned by the emperor to inscribe images from the imperial collection.
