Finely potted with deep rounded sides gently rising to a slightly everted rim, the exterior vividly painted with strong shades of cobalt-blue depicting an Immortal carrying a sword on his back, possibly Lü Dongbin approaching another Immortal beside a fruiting peach tree, another Immortal with bamboo hat beside a rising phoenix, all amidst a garden setting with pavilion and trees, all above a slightly tapering stem decorated with pendant lappets.
4 1/2in (11.5cm) high; 5 1/2in (14cm) diam; 1 11/16in (4.3cm) diam of foot

The present stem bowl was formerly in the collection of Sir Harry Garner and was illustrated and discussed in his study , London, 1954, p. 27. Garner placed it among a group of fine unmarked blue and white porcelains attributable to the second half of the fifteenth century, observing that 'there are a number of fine unmarked pieces, some of which approach Imperial quality, that may be attributed to the second half of the fifteenth century,' including 'a stem cup' [the present lot] attractively decorated with figures in a landscape.
Compare the painting of the figures and pavilions with those on a blue and white cylindrical tripod incense burner, Hongzhi, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 2000, pp. 46-47, no. 43. See also the similarly abbreviated and freely executed figural drawing on a small blue and white cup decorated with Wang Xizhi, late Chenghua, published in , Hong Kong, 1993, pp. 196-197.
