Jeremy Mason is a noted bibliophile and retired dealer in Chinese and Japanese art who started his career at Christie's in the late 1960s, particularly known for his collection of Oscar Wilde books and ephemera, sold at Bonhams London in February 2026.
Dragon-decorated carved polychrome lacquer wares were among the most favoured forms of Imperial lacquer during the Jiajing and Wanli periods. The present lot demonstrates confident and highly accomplished carving, with the bevelled cuts revealing the contrasting colours of the underlying lacquer layers, qualities that are widely recognised as characteristic of Imperial lacquer produced during this period.
Compare with a carved polychrome lacquer 'dragon' dish similarly decorated with two pairs of five-clawed dragons to the exterior sides, Jiajing six-character mark and of the period, in the Qing Court Collection, the Palace Museum Taipei, illustrated in (和光剔彩:故宮藏漆), Taipei, 2006, pl.92, p.103.
