At the center is Shakyamuni Buddha, wearing a patchwork monk's robe and holding an alms bowl. Above him are Padmasambhava, Amitayus, Amitabha, Shadakshari Lokeshvara, and Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the founder of Bhutan, reflecting both religious lineage and Bhutanese state identity. He is flanked by his chief disciples, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, with diminutive figures of Jambhala and Tara depicted below. The bottom register features Hayagriva, Kakamukha, Chaturbhuja Mahakala, Shri Devi, and Tsiu Marpo, prominent protective deities in Vajrayana Buddhism. The billowing, smoke-like clouds compare with those in Bhutanese paintings published on HAR (89178 and 89180). For further comparisons, see the Bhutanese thangkas formerly in the Jucker Collection, Sotheby's, New York, 26 March 2006, lots 128–130.
