Jeremy Mason, London
Jeremy Mason is a noted bibliophile and dealer in Chinese and Japanese art who started his career at Christie's in the late 1960s, particularly known for his collection of Oscar Wilde books and ephemera, sold by Bonhams London in February 2026. His Chinese art collection was housed in his 18th century townhouse, Hoyle's House, London, some pieces for the last 50 years.
A paper note affixed to reverse of the painting states:
Peng Yulin (1817-1890) is known as both an artist and pre-eminent military leader. He fell in love with the adopted daughter of his maternal grandmother, Meigu (plum blossom), but the match was rejected, she married another man, and died. Peng vowed to complete 10,000 paintings of plum blossom, to commemorate the namesake of his lost love.
This he did alongside a stellar military career. He rose to become Minister of War after a legendary military career in which he helped defeat the Taiping Army through his actions in the battles of Yuezhou and Tianjiazhen. A painting of plum blossom by the artist was sold by Bonhams London, 16 May 2023, lot 368.
