Compare a pair of similarly caparisoned horses illustrated by Robert D. Jacobsen, , Minneapolis, 2013, pp. 152–153. Tombs yielding horses of this distinctive type have been excavated in Henan, Liaoning, and Anhui provinces. These horses represent an important stylistic transition between the more stylized equine sculptures of the Northern Qi dynasty and the increasingly naturalistic horses characteristic of the Tang period.
