A similar scene of a general approaching a lady, her hand raised within her sleeve, is depicted on a blue and white brushpot, Chongzhen, illustrated in Transitional Wares and Their Forerunners, Hong Kong, 1981, no.82. See also a blue and white beaker vase of similar form, with related decoration to the middle and lower sections, but with the upper section painted with birds amidst ornamental rocks and flowering sprays, illustrated in , Hong Kong, 1981, p.89, no.65. An inscription on the vase incorporates the cyclical date (庚辰), corresponding to 1640.
The subject may tentatively relate to one of the celebrated tales of beautiful women whose allure brings about the downfall of powerful men. One possibility is the story of Xi Shi (西施), the renowned beauty whom Goujian (勾踐), King of Yue, sent to Fuchai (夫差), King of Wu, in an attempt to distract him from affairs of state; Fuchai became so enamoured of her that he neglected the government of his kingdom, ultimately contributing to its downfall. Alternatively, the scene may allude to the story of Diaochan (貂蟬), whose beauty was used to set the military commander Lü Bu (呂布) against his patron Dong Zhuo (董卓) in the . Both narratives would have carried particular resonance in the late Ming, when such stories could be read not simply as romantic episodes but as cautionary tales concerning the disruptive power of beauty, desire and the within the political sphere.
