Ganesha is particularly appropriate coupled with a ritual lamp. The elephant-headed god is revered as the remover of obstacles and is a deity of auspicious beginnings, while a lamp similarly carries associations of auspiciousness and the dispelling of darkness. The distinctive style of the headdress compares to that of a 17th/18th-century Nepalese Ganesha sold at Christie's, New York, 22 March 2011, lot 41, from the Alsdorf Collection, published in Pal, A Collecting Odyssey, 1997, pp. 64 and 288, cat. no. 74. For a further example see a circa 17th–18th-century Ganesha originally part of an oil lamp in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (1959-93-96).
