The motif depicted in the present lot is 'butterflies in love with flowers' ( 蝴戀花) which carries rich romantic symbolism in traditional Chinese culture. In popular metaphorical usage, the butterfly represents the male, while the flower symbolises the female. Accordingly, the motif of butterflies courting flowers constitutes one of the most direct visual expressions of the ideal union between a gentleman and a lady, embodying the wish for a harmonious and affectionate partnership.
