Finely embroidered in polychrome silk threads and couched gilt thread, the skirt decorated with alternating dragon roundels and striding five-clawed dragons amidst multicolored cloud scrolls, above the cresting lishui band, the upper register embroidered with a continuous band of confronting dragons pursuing flaming pearls, the borders with patterned woven silk bands.

The chao qun (朝裙), or Court Skirt, formed the lower half of the Qing chao pao (Court Dress) ensemble. This two-part construction was probably a feature inherited from Ming court dress. On the left side, at the seam between the lower and upper sections of the robe, there was a small square flap called a ren. The ren is not a pocket and apparently served no specific purpose. In her book Chinese Dress, Verity Wilson states that the ren may originally have been a scabbard slide.
