Footnotes
十八/十九世紀 白玉戲貓童子佩
The combination of a boy and a cat carries the auspicious rebus maodie tongzi (耄耋童子). The boy symbolises the beginning of life, while the Chinese word for 'cat' (mao 貓) is a homophone for mao (耄) referring to advanced old age. Together, the motif expresses the wish for longevity and enduring youthful vitality. See a white jade boy in a similar recumbent posture, Qing dynasty, in the collection of the Hebei Province Folk Museum, illustrated in Chinese Jades in Traditional Collections (中國傳世玉器全集), vol.6, Beijing, 2010, p.91.
See a related white and grey jade 'boy and cat' group, 18th century, which was sold at Christie's London, 4 September 2019, lot 5.
