Within the zitan frame the lacquered wood panel depicting on one side a caparisoned elephant bearing a cloth cradle containing various Buddhist emblems, its head turning to its left gazing at a nobleman and his servant, the bearded man with deep-set rounded eyes well-dressed in a long cloak and a pointy hat, his left hand resting on the handle of a sword, the servant dressed in a formal ensemble with a sword, presenting an oval container of offerings, the other servant similarly dressed and holding a long staff, the inlays finely carved and highlighted by colorful stones, the reverse side inlaid with a twelve-character poem flanked by a double-gourd seal and a square seal.
14 3/4 x 16 1/4 x 5 1/2in (37.5 x 41.2 x 14cm) overall;
14 5/8 x 11 x 1/2in (37.2 x 27.8 x 1.3cm) the panel
(later matched hongmu wood stand).
