This Bhutanese thangka depicts Padma Vajra Heruka in yab-yum, the principal deity of the Lama Gongdu cycle (Gathering of the Guru's Realization). He is surrounded by a complete mandalic assembly of wrathful deities. The upper register features Amitabha Buddha flanked by Chaturbhuja Avalokiteshvara and Padmasambhava. Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal (1594–1651), founder of Bhutan and leader of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition, appears at upper left, while the figure at upper right is likely Terton Sanggye Lingpa (1340–1396), revealer of the Lama Gongdu cycle.
The painting is distinguished by its vibrant palette, rounded verdant mountains, cascading waterfalls, craggy rock formations, stylized cloud banks, delicately rendered pink lotus thrones, and animated flame aureoles surrounding each wrathful deity. Compare with three other paintings depicting rare forms of Heruka from the Nyingma tradition in Bhutan (HAR 8569, 11561 & 23938). The treatment of the flame aureoles closely parallels that of a Bhutanese Chakrasamvara and Vajravarahi thangka sold at Christie's, New York, 23 July 2020, lot 65.
