Print. The Victory Banquet, no. 16 from the series Les Conquêtes de l’Empereur de la Chine, after Giuseppe Castiglione, direxit Charles Nicolas Cochin II. Following the successful conclusion of the Central Asian campaign in 1760, the emperor celebrated a grand victory banquet at the Pavilion of Purple Radiance (Ziguangge), located near the Forbidden City. The emperor and his officials are depicted on the right, while defeated Central Asian tribal representatives kneel on the left. Bolts of silk and other gifts are arranged as symbols of submission to Qing rule, while servants prepare a meal in the background. In the distance, the Marble Bridge and the White Dagoba in Beijing are visible. The pavilion also housed one hundred full-length portraits of heroes of the campaign.
From a German private collection. The work is part of a set of sixteen prints commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor in 1765 to commemorate Qing victories over Central Asian peoples between 1755 and 1759. The prints are based on paintings by Jesuit artists working in Beijing and were engraved in France between 1767 and 1774. The edition was financed by merchants from Canton. The series combines Chinese and European artistic traditions. European elements such as chiaroscuro, anatomical accuracy, and linear perspective are clearly visible, but adapted to Chinese preferences for panoramic compositions and elevated viewpoints. Cf.
