'Toys' are rare in English delftware. The shape is derived from a cooking vessel, which would have been placed in hot coals. A similar form painted in blue was exhibited by Garry Atkins in 1994, no.17. Although on a very different form the colour palette and the decoration on the present lot is closely related to a pair of Vauxhall plates, dated 1724, sold by Bonhams on 29 September 2020, lot 104.
