Literature
White, Mary, Drinking at the Whites' House, Vol.2, 2021, p.127
The decoration on this mug is exceptionally rare, and Mary White considers it to be the prettiest of all the mugs in her collection. The pastel colours would seem to relate to an earlier saltglaze palette and the carefully drawn scene has none of the usual characteristics of Vauxhall figure painting. A possible parallel, on a much larger scale, can be drawn with the Chinese figural scene painted in blue on an enormous Vauxhall vase illustrated by Massey, Marno and Spero, Ceramics of Vauxhall, 2007, p.61, no.71. It is interesting to compare this mug with the Worcester mug with related figure painting in a similar soft palette, exhibited by Simon Spero in 1995, no.19 and sold by Bonhams on 10 December 2008, lot 109, which could possibly be by the same hand. Simon Spero draws similarities between the soft pastel colours and decoration on opaque white glass produced in Birmingham or South Staffordshire.
