说明:Originally used as ritual wine containers, zun are known from the late Erligang period and grew in popularity during the Shang dynasty. They were made either with angular shoulders or of beaker shape, such as the present piece, which appears to have evolved from archaic bronze gu.
The present zun, distinguished by the flanges on the four sides and three decorative registers, finds close parallels among a group of similar vessels assigned to the late Shang to early Zhou transitional period. See a closely related example with notched flanges dated to the late 11th century BCE, formerly in the collection of Duan Fang (1861-1911), currently preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Object Number: 24.72.4. See also the Ji Zu Yi zun from the collection of Wu Dacheng (1835-1902), dated to the late Shang dynasty, with slightly different motif in the blades in the top register sold in our New York rooms, 18th March 2014, lot 3.
There are several comparable examples in the National Museum of Asian Art, Washington D.C., some from the Arthur M. Sackler Collection, exhibiting slight variations in design, including more slender proportions, flanges confined to the lower two registers, and differing decorative motifs, see accession numbers S1987.66, S1987.35, and S1987.52.
