JAPAN, MEIJI PERIOD (LATE 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURY), SIGNED <i>HOSHIN </i>(ISHIHARA HOSHIN)
The rounded rectangular body lacquered in gold, red and <i>sumi-e togidashi maki-e </i>with a continuous scene depicting the foxes' wedding procession rendered in silhouette on one side, and tall cryptomeria trees beyond a bold red <i>torii </i>at the entrance to a Shinto shrine on the other, the interior of rich <i>nashiji</i>, signed on the base in gold <i>hiramaki-e Hoshin</i>, with a two-part <i>rogin-nuri</i> <i>manju</i>-netsuke similarly embellished with two foxes holding lanterns at the front, guiding other foxes at the back carrying the fox bride inside a palanquin.
