The present lot is based on earlier, Jiajing period boxes and covers; see a related blue and white circular box and cover, decorated with dragons and phoenix, Jiajing six-character mark and of the period, which is illustrated by J.Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, London, 2005, p.228, fig.9:30. Compare also with a related blue and white 'fruits and flowers' box and cover, Jiajing six-character mark and of the period, which was sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 31 May 2017, lot 3192.
The style of the foliage, however, on the present lot, would point to the Shunzhi period; see for example, a blue and white bowl with carved decoration, Shunzhi, with similarly shaped leaves, and also a blue and white pot with spout, decorated with floral medallions, Shunzhi, illustrated by M.Butler, J.B.Curtis and S.Little, , Alexandria VA, 2002, pp.88-89.
